| Reach Program
Reach is an umbrella term that we use to encompass all of our sustainability programs and initiatives. As a specialty coffee roaster, we know that sustainable coffee farming is critical to our success. We can source distinctive coffees only as long as farmers continue to grow them. There are three fundamental principles that must balance to create sustainability: environmental stewardship, farm profitability and prosperous farming communities.
A key element of Reach is our strong working relationship with farm certification teams at the Rainforest Alliance® and Fair Trade®. Supporting organic coffee farming is also a priority for our green coffee buying team. To complement these efforts, we have developed direct trade partnerships with progressive farmers to support economic development in countries like Nicaragua and Tanzania. In other cases, we have established relationships with farming cooperatives to give back to their communities with funds for educational and medical programs.
Closer to home, Reunion Island is making significant strides as Canada’s “greenest” coffee roaster. Since July 2008, our roasting facility has been powered entirely by renewable energy provided by Bullfrog Power. We have also converted most of our shipping containers to unbleached kraft corrugate and improved our internal recycling programs. And in our most aggressive move to date, we switched our paper cups to ecotainer®, a leader in compostable paper cup technology.
